Hello and welcome to Athena’s Owls!

Updates:

We are currently holding a new creative writing competition to retell a myth from the monster’s point of view! You can find all the details here.

We now have a myth recording podcast, where you can listen to our stories. Click the link in the menu above or click here to listen to our first episode, where we read out the myth of Hercules and the Hydra.

You can now see the winning entries from our Shield of Achilles competition here, and head to our competition gallery to view the winners from all our competitions!

Unfortunately, all of our in-person events have been suspended due to Covid-19 restrictions. However, you can still get involved with Athena’s Owls by signing up for our live event or entering our competition or by trying out some of the projects on our Resources page!

Athena’s Owls is a Manchester-based series of free craft and literacy activity workshops for children, now with hubs in Birmingham and Liverpool. Our aim is to provide a fun environment for children where they can learn a little about life in the ancient world by creating something they can take home with them at the end. The Owls who come along to our workshop might have heard of some of the myths, like Hercules’ terrifying encounter with the Hydra, or Perseus’ defeat of the gorgon Medusa, or they might even have covered some bits of Ancient Rome or Egypt in school – sometimes, they haven’t heard of any of it. By introducing (or re-introducing) our Owls to the ancient world, we want to spark their curiosity and creativity, and encourage them to want to learn more – and we think it works quite well!

In February 2019 we were lucky enough to be awarded a Public Engagement grant from the Institute of Classical Studies in London. You can read our post on their blog here.

On this website you can find out more about the project and download templates and activity plans for each of our sessions, so have a browse through and get in touch if you have any ideas, or if you’d like to get involved, or if you simply want to know more!
